Just one hundred years ago, Earthlings spent significantly more time in nature and in the open air and had little artificial light to challenge their eyes. Today, many of us stare all day long at some type of a blue screen. Unfortunately, going against nature that much has its price. Nowadays, more and more people wear glasses. That number significantly increases after the age of 40 or 50. In fact, after the age of 70 you will barely see people who do not wear glasses.

A brilliant researcher by the name of William Bates, examined the present state of humanity’s vision and posed significant questions: what happened to people’s vision in the last 100 years and why? Fortunately, Bates not only asked those questions, but he also answered them. This led to the development of simple and ground-breaking techniques for vision improvement. I recommend Bates’ book “Better Eyesight Without Glasses”.

When studying vision deterioration caused by aging, Bates found that the process has little to do with aging.

He discovered that one of the major causes of vision deterioration was the inability of the eye muscles to relax after they have been used rigorously.

This was an unusual and original concept: glasses were needed due to eye muscles spasms, not due to defects in the eyes.

Once Bates fully incorporated this concept, he realized

that the defect can be corrected, or at least improved.

Up to that moment, the common belief was that once your vision deteriorated it could not be restored. To prove his theory Bates developed a series of eye exercises for vision improvement. At present, there are a myriad of testimonials from people who successfully used his methods.

One of the most profound examples of vision change with Bates’ methods was a young man by the name of Meir Schneider who was born with severe bilateral eye defects making him legally blind. Having nothing to lose, the 17 year old young man started using Bates methods for more than ten hours a day. Schneider trained with iron-willed perseverance, day after day after day. Soon his vision started improving. More training followed more improvement, until Schneider was actually able to use his eyes. Today, Schneider is capable of reading, writing and driving. He is a successful businessman, and a founder of the school of Self-Healing in San Francisco. I recommend his book “Vision for Life” where Schneider shares exercises for vision improvement, in part based on Bates techniques and in part on his own discoveries.

Bates is not the first one who discovered that vision problems can be improved and reversed. Tibetan yogis developed many exercises for vision improvement centuries ago, but Bates was one of the pioneers who popularized this knowledge in the West and made it easily available.

Today I will introduce to two simple techniques: sunning and palming.

What is sunning?

Sunning is a method that exposes your retina (a screen at the back of your eye that allows you to see) to the light from the sun, but in a safe way.

Everybody knows that if you stare directly at the sun, you will damage your eyes and your vision. However, is it possible to benefit from the sunlight without burning your retina? The answer to this question is yes, you can, and the next paragraph explains the exercise called sunning.

Stand facing the sun and close your eyes. Start moving your eyeballs slowly from side to side while allowing the sun’s rays to fall on your closed eyelids.

Of course regular repetition, like anything in life, brings better results. Perseverance is the key word for success.

The second method is called cupping.

Sit or lie down in a dark room. Rub the palms of your hands together and place them over your eyes, covering them completely. Relax and perceive the black color surrounding you with eyes closed.

Again, perseverance is the key to success. There are no limitations on how many times you can repeat this exercise.

In addition, filtering the blue light emitted from your computer and phone screens is a useful tool to reduce the stress on your eyes when working or playing.

There are several methods of achieving this. One method is to wear blue light-filtering glasses when you work with screens.

The second, and the one I use, is to cover the computer and phone screens with a transparent, self-adhesive, blue light filter which you can easily purchase online.

Enjoy these God-given methods of vision evolution and revolution. Let’s bow to those who broke the waves and persevered!
